I hate provisional cast-on.

You're supposed to. :) Ever tried a crochet-chain cast-on?

Nope. What I did was knit a few rows in waste yarn that I'll just cut out later. :) I'll try the crochet chain cast-on next time. :)
Now that I can remember how to do them without looking them up, I like provisional cast-ons. Unfortunately they cannot be put down very well until you've knit the first row, unless you do the one that's worked into a crochet chain. That one takes longer to do, but is so much easier to work with.
I crochet the chain over the needle, because I have yet to figure out where to pick up from a chain that's already made.
