Came here via Scalzi. I've been an editor for a paying online market for 5 years and I've never heard of such a thing. And the fact that they rewrote it and think you should compensate them... I'm blown away. I'm glad you came out with this story. May you get mucho publicity and huge writing deals from this fool's response... :)
Ditto here. I've been a professional editor for sundry publishers for 10 years, and I've never worked for a publisher who thought that the web was public domain (that's like saying anything you find in a library is in the public domain, IMHO. Just because you can find it in a public place
it is not in the public domain.) I've also never worked for a publisher who thought that writers should pay to be edited for professional publication. You buy the work from the writer
and, depending on the publication, the writer, your contract, the deadlines, and sundry other variables, either edit it or return it for edits, and you pay the author the agreed-upon fee.
Sweet merciful Oxford. I'm embarrassed on behalf of my profession.
