Previous Entry Quick update!! Nov. 4th, 2010 @ 11:17 am Next Entry
First -- I have heard absolutely zero from Cooks Source -- however, HELLO INTERNET!! NICE TO SEE YOU!! Welcome to my blog!!

@neilhimself retweeted this story: http://twitter.com/neilhimself !!! -- My nerd life is complete.

(tho it will be more complete is @wilw would comment too... :)

This is now on the front page of reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/e147w/website_article_gets_copied_without_permission_by/ -- HELLO REDDITORS! Nice to see you!!!

And apparently the internet as a whole has decided to take up my case on the Facebook webpage of Cooks Source

Topsy.com has informed me that (as of 11:15AM EDT) that there's been 1,300+ trackbacks to my article.

John Scalzi has posted and tweeted: http://whatever.scalzi.com/

If it gets posted elsewhere, please feel free to repost it here.

And, first and foremost, I am utterly grateful and thankful for all the lovely and wonderful comments I have gotten so far. Internet -- you rule. Thank you so much.

Lawyer up.

Please, please, PLEASE consult a lawyer. No lawyer will give you legal advice over the internet, but based on the limited information I've seen, this would be a very easy case to win. That's good for you and the attorney... make some calls and see someone.

Honey, did you attend Columbia? If yes, isn't there an adviser or mentor you could contact for advice on how to proceed? Maybe the school can back you? Maybe they can use you as a story subject for the Columbia Journalism Review? Or maybe Poynter will catch wind of this, too.

Maybe you should knock on Columbia's and Poynter's doors with your case. It's a more civilized and forceful option than hate messages on their social media pages. And the proper appeal channels and pressure from professional organizations are a better option than yelling, vandalizing, and savagery by angry followers. You have your author's name to protect from that, too.

Finally, I love that you asked for compensation to take the form of a donation to Columbia. But I think you undersold yourself. Ten cents a word is the rate of a story mill like Demand Studios or Examiner. I think you should have asked for $1 a word. : ) Keep your standards high.

and now, more updates from facebook before i head to bed

"As an advertiser, we are disappointed in Cook's Source and we are pulling our ads from this publication. Many of us (as is the case with our business) paid several months in
advance for advertising and are unlikely to get any compensation back.
We ask that you please stop emailing our business, we agree that the
publication made a grave error, but the blame should be placed with
them. Please do not make small businesses like mine pay for their error
in judgment.

Pleased to meet you too. You have awesome food. Every time I go to Gulf War, I must have some.

At least one of their advertisers has canceled their contract.

Dunno if you've been to their facebook page, but you're in Good Companie -- one of their other plagiarized entries in the same issue belongs to Paula Deen.

Nice to see the Internet helping out.

Though, it'd be nice to see a screenshot or something... and I noticed in your last article, you said: I am just quoting a piece of it here. So does that mean it's not the full response?

I for one did not know about either publication before this came to light, but I've become an instant fan of godecookery.com. I foresee some fun cooking experiments in my near future.

Although they do mostly visual/design stuff, you might want to holler at http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com/

I agree with another commenter that it doesn't look like they have a lot of money but the audacity of their response to you is shocking.

Good luck in your fight. I'm rooting for you.

I work for a law firm in D.C. and shared your story with a couple of the lawyers I work with. If you don't already have counsel, I imagine several attorneys (here and elsewhere) would be happy to take this case if you wanted to pursue legal action against the editor and the magazine.
