My very first cookbook was "The Starving Student's Cookbook" -- it's still in print!!

It was very basic but it taught me to not fear the kitchen. That -- and I also started helping out cooking feasts in my medieval organization. Learning from people who love food and love to cook made me love it too.

Start with a basic cookbook like that -- then move onto something like "How to Cook Everything" by Mark Bittman. I have the 2006 edition and it's fantastic. (And stained. Every cookbook I use regularly is stained. :)

Check out Real Simple magazine, Epicurious.com and Cooking Light as well.

And oh yeah -- if you want to make a great impression on people for cheap -- Pot Roast.

PS. ONE last cooking hint that always works -- when you're making turkey for Thanksgiving -- use a cooking bag. Works like an utter charm.

I'll give it one more try, but fear that cooking is like algebra--which I loathed. Anything I loathe that much I'm just not good at.

Perhaps I should advertise for a cabana boy with culinary talents. If he cooks, I'll do the clean up.

Oh yeah, brining the turkey ALSO totally rocks.

You should give cooking a try. Start simple and build from there. :) Alton Brown's books are fantastic too. (I have "I am Only Here for the Food" -- breaks down cooking into nerdspeak. It's fantastic.)

I have to laugh at the stained cookbook comment, because in my family, the easiest way to tell what cookbooks have our favourite recipes in them is to look at how stained, dog-eared, and in some cases outright-falling-apart they are. Or with my somewhat neater brother, how many slips of paper and post-it notes are sticking out of the edges.
